Sabena Desert a Little Known True Desert in Wajir Kenya

Sometimes in August, 2022 we were on a field tour to observe vegetation patterns in arid and semi arid areas.

Referencing an old colonial map, we happened upon the Sabena Desert.

A simple search on Google would not trace any literature or mention of the same.

So we found the desert with vast landscape, mirage and miniature sand dunes. After about 35KMs an immediate acacia barrier severed marking the boundary of the dramatic Sabena desert.

While taking photos, some young ones of lambs had strayed from their homestead and came running through the vastness. Moments later two boys probably aged 5 and 7 came running after them and the mother was quite a distance also following in the same direction.

The somali community live near the Sabena Desert and they witness nothing grown in the thousands of acres of sand.

A 30 minutes stay would make one feel the full force of the elements.
