One of the major concerns that first time local travellers to Kenya’s North have is the state of Security in Kenya’s North..
Here and now we are going to demystify years of misreporting that has made the marvelous wonders of the North to escape many.
First off, lets think of distance and movement and how it affects your security.
If you take Nairobi for example, think of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) vs the Nairobi Central business district (NCBD) is a distance of 18 KMs – what happens to JKIA when a thug is shot in downtown Kirinyaga. People continue with their business unmoved right?
Now lets take a look at Marsabit county and how distance and movement makes insecurity the least concern in a travellers mind, when on an adventure in Kenya’s North.
We are going to look at one constituency in Marsabit, the first one you set your eyes on when you arrive in Marsabit.. that’s LAISAMIS
For the purpose of our demonstration, I will consider Merille town on A2 highway and Loiyangalani which is near lake Turkana. Mark you, these two towns are in the same Constituency, leave alone the same county.
Now what’s the shortest distance between these two towns by road..?!?
wait for it… and let google maps do the talking
That’s some 254 Km or 5hrs, 44 minutes on selfdrive..
If there was was commotion in a remote village near Loiyangalani, how long will it take a criminal who is fleeing on foot or if lucky and has enough fuel to ride a motorbike to get to the other tip of the constituency to a village near Merille.. ?!? It would take days right?
This is what happens when Insecurity issues are reported in Kenya’s North: the reporter will talk of Laisamis constituency, yet the issues are isolated to a distant village.. and will make it appear that an entire county with tens of thousands of square kilometers appear to be on tumult.
One more example to help you compare and contrast:
From Nairobi to Eldoret is 264km (There is Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Baringo, Kericho and Uasin Gishu counties that you have to drive through from either town)
From Merille to Loiyangalani is 254km (a margin of error of 10KM) and both towns are in the same constituency. Think like a security person, distance and movement and with intelligence you can navigate your way for decades and never witness any danger.
